Public record officials have refused to process a transgender woman’s request to change her name. The trans woman in question, a 27-year-old from Los Angeles, United States, who currently goes by the name Zoi, but would like to change this to Zoey, said on Friday “it’s transphobic.”

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles court which refused the name change said: “transphobia has nothing to do with it.”

Zoi claimed the name change was required because people always pronounce her name like Joy. “I thought it was cute, you know, quirky, but honestly it’s just annoying. My name is Zoey, I just want the spelling to reflect that.”

The reason the court gave for refusing the name change application is that this is Zoi’s 753rd request for a new name in eight years.

“Picking a new name is hard,” Zoi said.
