“I haven’t been camping since I was a kid,” Lily Morgan told us on Tuesday. “My parents used to take me, but then I transitioned and… well, we don’t talk now.”
Lily has already bought a tent and a sleeping bag for the camps she’s heard Trump plans to organise. “I just think it will be really exciting, you know? Like summer camp for kids, but this is for transgender adults. Maybe I’ll make a friend. I’d really like to have a friend.”
Lily has been transitioning for five years. She describes it as being incredibly hard and incredibly worthwhile at first and incredibly hard and incredibly lonely after a while. She blames this on her transition, but also on people hating her for her right-wing Christian beliefs. “It’s mainly about taxes,” she assures us. “And guns. I love guns. I have like thirty. Taxes and guns, that’s all.” Lily is hoping shooting is one of the main opportunities at the trans camps. As well as a friend, she is also looking for a boyfriend.
“Someone who also loves guns, and agrees with my Christian values, that women should stay at home and have babies. Obviously I can’t have babies, but once President Trump bans abortion, there will be a lot of kids around to adopt. Maybe I can meet a bunch of women at the camp, and we can make a new mother’s group!”
She’s incredibly excited about the whole thing, but has two worries about the camps. “I hope there are no Black or Jewish trans women in my camp,” she explained when asked what concerns she has. “They should have their own camps, so that’s a big concern. That, and insects.”
